Hats off to Crowns' Stellar Ensemble

REVIEW: Crowns, at the NAC through March 18
By DENIS ARMSTRONG, OTTAWA SUN, Sat, March 4, 2006

Crowns, at the NAC. YOU CAN tell a lot about a person by the clothes they wear. Nowhere does that ring true than in Regina Taylor's
charming musical memoir Crowns.

Based on Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry's book Crown, Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats, this
NAC-Manitoba Theatre Centre Canadian premiere centres on the spectacular hats black women in the deep south
wear to Sunday services. It might not sound like much of a story to hang a two-hour musical on, but that's only
the launching point to larger adventures.  ... read the rest

Give the CROWNS Drummer Some!

Romero Wyatt wants some too, since the director (M. Caffey) and musical conductor (Harper) preceded him "Favorites." Swing in this Sunday (Jan. 30)

- ..."Added to the experience is percussionist Romero Wyatt whose obvious display of love and enthusiasm for his art is contagious as he performed drumming, stomping, clapping and dancing. A few numbers were sung without any accompaniment other then Romero's genius yet were more moving than the addition of instruments."

Percussion Discussion
During the CROWNS production promotion for the Geva Theatre in Rochester, NY, Romero, percussionist, and actress Joy Lyn Mathews were asked to host the WDKX 104 FM 8 a.m. morning show twice, and on both occasions Romero's CD's Aaaaaahhh Lately and Backbone were aired.  Also, Romero and DJ Freddy Colon performed live with a percussion discussion on congas throughout the show.

A Crowning Glory
Studio Arena's "Crown's" to kick off Niagara Movement centennial celebration!

Studio Arena’s “Crown’s” is the first 2005 event scheduled to mark the 100th anniversary of the Niagara Movement.

Cast Is Full of Exceptional Voices
"... The music is what it's all about here, and this is why you should to to see it.  The musical direction by eMarcus Harper, who also plays a mean and well-tempered electric keyboard, is first rate.  Percussionist Romero Wyatt provides fabulous rhythmic support, his blending of African, gospel, rap and jazz beats staggeringly impressive.  The sound was expertly designed by Studio Arena's Rick Menke."  -  ...read the rest  [PDF]    ... read the rest (pay per aritcle)

Hats off to ‘Crowns’  City - Rochester City News
By Herbert M. Simpson

"...As directed and choreographed by a master of musical storytelling, Marion J. Caffey, who wrote and directed the thrilling Cookin' at the Cookery here and across the country, Crowns is a high-energy crowd-pleaser. Musical director e' Marcus Harper accompanies the cast on keyboards, and an amazing percussionist, Romero Wyatt, does everything but acrobatics as a one-man rhythm section."  ... read the rest
